DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 68000-04 is a pair of fork springs rated at 5.5 N/mm, 330 mm long with a 25.3 mm inner diameter. Factory fork springs are chosen for an average rider on an average road; few riders are either.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 25.3 mm
  • Öhlins part number 68000-04
  • 148 mm of usable stroke
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Measured spring rate 5.5 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 330 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 330 mm and the inner diameter at 25.3 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 5.5 N/mm

On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
