DescriptionThe whole story▼
Enduro riders spend a surprising amount of energy picking up their bikes. On a Kawasaki KLX 450R, a full-size four-stroke enduro, lifting it out of a muddy hollow at the end of a long day can take more out of you than the riding itself, and while the bike lies there, its whole weight rests on the bar and levers. The C7165 is Accossato's folding clutch lever for the KLX 450R of 2008 to 2020, CNC-machined in Italy from Ergal 7075, with a long blade for four fingers and a joint that lets it fold.
Key Features
- Folding clutch lever for the Kawasaki KLX 450R, 2008 to 2020
- Fits the original clutch mount in place of the stock lever
- Long blade laid out for four fingers
- Anti-break joint allows the blade to fold forward on impact
- Machined from solid Ergal 7075 in Italy
- Blade in black, blue or green, base in a dark finish
- No German ABE documented; for off-road use
Construction and Material Quality
The C7165 is milled from a solid billet of Ergal 7075 on CNC machines in Italy, with Accossato aiming for a lever that is strong, light and reliable, the three qualities it expects from this high-strength aluminium alloy. It is built in two parts: a base in a dark finish, which stays on the pivot of the clutch mount and holds the joint, and a blade in black, blue or green. When the bike falls, that joint allows the blade to fold forward rather than take the impact rigidly. On the clutch side Accossato uses its longer blade, with room for four fingers.
Lifting the Bike on Your Own
Most riders learn the technique the hard way. Put the bike in gear first, so it cannot roll while you lift. Then crouch beside it, take the lower handlebar grip in one hand and a solid part of the rear, such as the frame or a grab handle, in the other, keep your back straight and push up with your legs until the wheels take the weight. In deep mud it helps to rock the bike slightly first to break the suction, and on a slope it is far easier to lift a bike whose wheels point downhill than one lying the other way. A tired rider who lifts with the back rather than the legs pays for it the next morning.
All this time the KLX 450R lies on one side, and when that is the left, the clutch lever carries part of the machine's weight, sometimes pressed onto a stone or a root. The longer it lies there and the more it is shifted around during the lift, the more strain the lever sees. The joint on the C7165 gives the blade a way out: it can fold forward rather than bending or snapping under that load. It will not always come through, but when it does, the lift ends with a bike you can ride away. Before setting off, pull the clutch a couple of times to make sure it feels as it should.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the C7165 for the Kawasaki KLX 450R from 2008 to 2020 and fits it at the original clutch mount. Its brake-side partner, the B8262 folding lever, spans the same years and is also made in gold; for identical colours on both sides, choose black, blue or green.
Road Approval
There is no German ABE documented for the C7165. Should your KLX 450R be registered for the road, bear in mind that the lever is not approved there; the C7165 is intended for competition and for off-road riding away from public roads.
