The two halves of the P14 trade do not run on the same clock, and that is the most useful thing to know before buying one. The airflow given up — 1,800 litres per square metre per second instead of the P08 figure of 5,050 — is only ever missed in the moments when the engine is asking for everything the intake can deliver: wide throttle, high revolutions, held there. The retention gained, 14 microns instead of 80, is working in every second the engine turns, including idling, coasting and sitting in traffic. So the question is not which element is better. It is how many of the seconds in a typical ride belong to each side of that exchange.
Key Features
- 14 microns of filtration, working continuously — against an airflow cost that shows only at full demand
- Special P14 non-woven fabric, dry, washable and reusable
- 1,800 litres per square metre per second of airflow, where the P08 gives 5,050
- No oil in the medium, so nothing can be drawn onto the throttle body or the intake sensors
- Replaces the original element in the standard airbox — nothing modified, no remap, homologation untouched
- Two years of warranty, from the date of purchase
Count the seconds, not the specification
Add up an ordinary ride honestly and the picture is lopsided. Most of the running time is spent at part throttle, at moderate revolutions and at loads well below anything that could make the intake the limiting element. Filtration is the only one of the two properties on duty the whole time. The flow figure looks like the dramatic number on a data sheet; in practice it is usually the one that costs nothing, while the micron figure, invisible and never felt, is the one doing work.
When the asymmetry turns around
It does turn around, and the case is worth stating rather than hiding. A machine that spends a large share of its running time at full throttle and high revolutions — a track bike, or one built and geared to be ridden that way — has moved most of its seconds into the column where flow matters, and it is usually running on surfaces with little airborne dust into the bargain. Both halves of the trade then point the other way, and the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second is the better buy. The same logic runs further along the range: the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns and the T12 at 7 microns exist for conditions this element is not built for. Choose by the seconds, not by the smallest number.
Care and cleaning
Play compressed air over the clean side of the PM186P14 and work it outwards. Anything that stays behind will come away in lukewarm water with a mild detergent; rinse until the water runs clear. Then leave it in open air until it is completely dry — heat and flame are both out — and refit it dry. No oiling closes the job.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha Y15ZR/LC150, 2015 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM186P14 element is listed for six model names across that period; the full list is in the Fitment tab, and the maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
