Two figures are published for this element and a third deliberately is not. Sprint Filter states 14 microns of filtration and a rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec for the P14. It states no retention percentage. Percentages do exist elsewhere in the range — they were measured on the woven polyester media, against a stated particle size — and lifting one of them across to a nonwoven mat would be inventing a number rather than quoting one. So this page works with the two figures there are, which turn out to be enough to choose with.
Key Features
- Two published figures: 14 microns of filtration, 1,800 l/m²/sec of rated flow
- Dry special nonwoven — a fibre mat with depth, not a woven polyester cloth
- Direct fit in the series SRT 550 SX airbox, with no modification and no remap
- Roughly twice the filtering area of an ordinary performance element
- Dry at every stage of its life; regenerated with compressed air, never oiled
- Two years of warranty, and a service life set to that of the motorcycle
Where the percentages come from
A retention percentage is not a property a medium carries around with it. It is the result of one test, run against particles of one stated size, and it means very little quoted away from those conditions. The published comparisons in this range were made that way, and they describe woven cloth. A nonwoven mat retains material through its thickness instead of at a face, which is a different mechanism, so no percentage measured on a weave can be assumed to carry over to it. None has been published for this medium, and saying so is better than borrowing one.
Two numbers are enough
They are, because the decision they support is a simple one. A rating of 14 microns is the fine end of what is catalogued for this airbox; 1,800 l/m²/sec is about a third of what the woven element in the same housing is rated to pass. Finer retention, lower throughput — one trade, stated twice — and the only question it puts to an SRT 550 SX owner is what the roads are actually like. What it does not put is a power question. A slot-in element does not make a standard SRT 550 SX noticeably stronger, and this one gives away intake headroom in order to do its real job.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, is the whole of a normal service; the load leaves by the route along which it arrived. A greasy film rather than dry dust lifts under lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent, rinsed thoroughly. Drying is by moving air and time alone, with no heat source of any kind, and the PM209P14 must be dry through the full thickness of the mat before it goes back in. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
