A dry, washable filter changes the relationship. It is inspected because inspecting it costs nothing, cleaned with an air line and put back, and it does not become a purchase every service. On a bike that owners tend to keep for a long time and rebuild more than once, a part designed to last the life of the motorcycle simply outlives several versions of the motorcycle itself. Compressed air travels through the element from the clean side outwards; where that leaves something behind, a wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes the job, rinsed until the water runs clear. Open air dries it fully — heat and flame never do — and it is refitted dry, with no oiling step at any point.
