The Tuareg shares its parallel twin with the RS660 and the Tuono 660, and it does not share their air filter. That surprises people often enough to be worth putting first. A filter is drawn around a housing, not around an engine: the same twin sits in a sports frame with a low, tightly packaged airbox in one machine and under a tall tank with an entirely different intake layout in the other, and the panel that seals one aperture will not seal the other. SM240S is the element specified for the Tuareg, and the engine badge is no help in choosing it.

Housing first, engine second

Reading a catalogue by engine size is the most common way to order the wrong panel. The reliable route runs the other way: identify the model and its year, take the part number that combination points to, and check it against the element that comes out. On this machine that path ends at SM240S, and it ends there for every Tuareg of the 2021 to 2026 range regardless of trim. The number is what the specification hangs on; the model name and the capacity are only the way to reach it.

What the standard grade offers a travel enduro

Sprint Filter publishes 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles for this material, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton element — the comparison that matters most, since oiled cotton is the usual alternative. What it does not offer is more power. An element inside an unaltered airbox leaves a series Tuareg producing what the factory certified, and any listing that suggests otherwise is describing a wish. The dependable benefits are a low intake resistance, the fact that cleaning returns it to that value rather than part of the way, and a panel that is washed instead of bought again.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air blown from the clean side outward is the routine service: it lifts the load back out through the face that collected it. When a dusty trip leaves more than air will shift, lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes it; rinse the panel thoroughly and let it dry completely in moving air.
