Why the Rate Holds
Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

Where This Rate Belongs
Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Installation
Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
