How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.
The Numbers That Matter
The 57 mm bore and 150 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 85 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
What This Rate Does
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.
Applications
Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Fitting
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
