Why the Rate Holds
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.
The Numbers That Matter
The 46 mm bore and 200 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 22 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 22 N/mm
A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
Installation
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
