On a road-ridden 990 Duke R the answer is uncomfortable. Fitting the finest element in the programme gives up roughly eight parts in nine of the rated passage, and if the air never held what the mat was drawn to arrest, there is no dramatic symptom at the end of it. There is only an element that comes out looking much as it went in. The test exists. It is just slow, and quiet.

Key Features

The extreme-conditions medium: dry polyester nonwoven, 7 microns, 560 l/m²/sec

Standard cloth for comparison: 80 microns at 5,050 — roughly nine times the rate

Washable, so what it has collected can be inspected at any interval you choose

Dry from manufacture, with no oil to apply, judge or carry downstream

Takes the original panel's place in the series airbox; nothing modified, no remap

Covered for two years from the purchase date

The test you can actually run

Fit it, ride the year you normally ride, and look at what comes out. A mat that has clearly been working is evidence that the air deserved it; one that gives up almost nothing after a season is evidence that it did not, and that the rate was surrendered for very little. Either result is worth having, and neither costs anything beyond the time to open the housing — which is the practical advantage of a medium that is cleaned rather than thrown away. Very few decisions about a motorcycle answer themselves this cheaply.

What the test cannot settle

It cannot tell you what the reduced passage was worth in return, because that half never appears as an object on a bench. Sprint Filter publishes no engine-level figures, this page will not invent any, and the material is more restrictive than the standard weave by design. Nor is it a power part in either direction: no element dropped into an unmodified airbox makes a standard 990 Duke R quicker. What every medium for this housing offers is an intake restriction that begins below a disposable panel's and is brought back there with an air line, instead of climbing between services.

Care and cleaning

Take the PM175T12 out and hold a compressor line against its clean side, working the jet outward until the mat releases nothing further — that is the service, and it is also the inspection. When more than air is needed, hand-warm water with a mild detergent will finish it, followed by rinsing for as long as the water keeps colouring. Dry it in open moving air only, never with heat and never near a flame, and refit it once no dampness is left in it. Four machines are catalogued against this code, from the 790 of 2018 to the current 990s; the other media for this housing reach one machine further.
