One Component Apart

Spark sells this code in two builds and the difference is a single item in the middle of the system. GYA8862TOM has a flat stainless pre-silencer box under the engine and an EC certificate to go with it. This one has a titanium link pipe instead.

Everything upstream and downstream is shared: the 3-into-1 stainless collector, the catalytic converter, the full titanium Grid-O silencer, the brackets and the low mounting position. If you were to lay the two systems side by side, one section would differ.

Why It Costs More Than the Legal One

1.487 euro against 1.404 for the approved version. That looks backwards until you look at the material: a stainless box is a cheaper thing to build than a titanium pipe, and the racing build swaps in the more expensive component.

So this is not a way to save money by going without paperwork. It is a lighter, freer-breathing middle section for a motorcycle that lives on circuits, and you pay for the titanium.

What Spark Does Not Publish

Two figures on Spark's page belong to the approved build and not to this one. The 93,5 dB at 5.000 rpm was measured with the silenced box fitted, and the 5,3 kg is the weight Spark quotes for the code as a whole. Removing a stainless box and fitting a titanium pipe makes a system lighter and louder, but Spark states no separate numbers, so neither do we.

The same applies to photography. Spark's studio and bike images for code GYA8862 all show the boxed version, which is why the gallery here is limited to the parts the two builds share.

Track Use, Stated Plainly

There is no certificate for this build. It must not be fitted to a motorcycle used on public roads, and no amount of goodwill at an inspection changes that. If the machine is registered and ridden on the road, GYA8862TOM is the article you want.

The Silencer Is Still the Moto2 One

Whatever sits in the middle, the can at the end is the full titanium Grid-O with the perforated mesh cap — the design Spark developed for the Moto2 grid. It mounts low, in the standard position, so the rear of the motorcycle looks unchanged.

Yamaha MT-09, XSR 900 and Tracer 900 / Tracer 900 GT, 2013 to 2020. The approved build of this code is GYA8862TOM at 1.404 euro. Spark's dedicated racing systems for the platform are GYA8870T with a TIG-welded titanium pipe and the full titanium GYA8874T.
