The Position KTM Abandoned
A hundred and twenty-five horsepower from a 1050 cc twin, sitting between the middleweight 790 and the 1290. KTM dropped the 1090 in 2019 and never directly replaced it, which is why used examples hold their value the way they do.
The Sweet Spot Argument
Riders who have owned both the 1090 and the 1290 frequently prefer the smaller bike: lighter, easier at walking pace and quick enough that the difference never matters on a real road. It is a familiar argument and generally a sound one.
What the Left Hand Carries
Indicators, horn, beam, cruise control on equipped bikes and the navigation of a menu with riding modes and ABS settings behind it. On a touring machine all of it is worked repeatedly across whole days.
Repetition Rather Than Abuse
Nothing dramatic happens to an adventure bike's switchgear. The controls are simply operated tens of thousands of times a year, and the point at which they stop feeling definite arrives long before anything fails outright.
Three Model Years
The fitment covers 2017 to 2019. Parts specific to the 1090 were never made in quantity and the model has no successor, which makes correctly engineered components worth taking when they appear.
Sealed Elements
Contacts sealed inside a body milled from one block. These motorcycles are ridden when the forecast is poor, and the absence of a moulded seam is what keeps the controls accurate at the end of a wet fortnight.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the surface rather than applied. On a cockpit carrying guards, a display and several mounts, it is the option that disappears.
