DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Hypermotard 821 brought a liquid-cooled Testastretta engine to Ducati's supermoto-styled road bike in 2013, together with a tall seat, long suspension and a wide, flat handlebar. On its side stand, a bike built like that leans over noticeably, which makes it easy to misjudge the engine oil level. Reading it correctly is the first step of every oil check. For the Hypermotard 821 of 2013 to 2015, including the Low Seat and the SP, Accossato lists the FP004, an aluminium oil filler cap with an M20x2.5 thread, CNC-machined and anodised.

Key Features

  • Oil filler cap for the Ducati Hypermotard 821, 2013 to 2015
  • Also listed for the Hypermotard 821 SP and the Low Seat version
  • Thread M20x2.5, as given by Accossato
  • CNC-machined aluminium, anodised
  • Eight colours: red, black, silver, titanium, gold, orange, blue, green
  • Can be matched with Accossato's TS003, TS012 and TS014 caps
  • No German ABE on file; for track use

Construction and Material Quality

CNC machining gives the FP004 its shape and anodising gives it its colour, with aluminium as the starting material. Red, black, silver, titanium, gold, orange, blue and green are offered. Accossato's only stated dimension is the thread, M20x2.5, and the company notes that the cap fits the applications on its list and can be adapted to other motorcycles with the same cap size. Because several Ducatis on that list share this cap, the thread is also how you recognise it elsewhere; the fitment section below names a few of them.

Upright for an Honest Reading

Most owner's manuals say exactly how a motorcycle must stand while the oil level is read, and on a Hypermotard 821 that instruction deserves to be taken literally. Tall suspension and a side stand make the bike lean further than a sports bike would, so a reading taken as it stands in the garage can look alarmingly low or deceptively high. Put the bike in the position the manual describes; a helper who holds it, or a suitable paddock stand, makes that easy. Give the oil the settling time the manual specifies after the engine has run, and read the level only then. If you need to add oil, wait until the engine is switched off and cool before opening the filler, clean around it first and pour in small amounts, reading again after each one. Overfilling is no better than running low. Refit the FP004 by hand until it seats, after wiping the thread and the sealing face, and resist the urge to give it an extra turn with a tool. Finally, write the date and the reading in a notebook. After a few entries you will know how your Hypermotard 821 uses oil and when the next check is due.

Fitment and Compatibility

On Accossato's list the FP004 is given for the Hypermotard 821 of 2013 to 2015, for the Hypermotard 821 SP of the same years and for the Low Seat version of 2015. The thread is M20x2.5, and Accossato adds that the cap can be adapted to other motorcycles with the same cap size. Inter-Pace also catalogues it for the Hyperstrada 821, the Monster 821 and the Diavel. Accossato makes three more caps for this Hypermotard: the TS003 for the front brake reservoir and two different caps for the rear reservoir, TS012 and TS014. For a matching set, choose one of the seven colours they share with the FP004.

Road Approval

Since we hold no ABE or test mark for this oil filler cap, it is listed for circuit use and competition.
