DescriptionThe whole story

Owners of an FZ-09 tend to find their front brake's limit on a road they do not know. The pad is the S001, cut at 69.5 by 50.5 mm to sit square in the Sumitomo caliper of the FZ-09. What is new on the Yamaha FZ-09 is the compound - EXR, on a backing plate alloy specified with it.

Key Features

  • Initial bite in the order of EXC Endurance, with a progressive build-up that returns the modulation EXC traded away
  • One pack holds the two pads for a single caliper - an FZ-09 with twin front discs therefore needs two packs
  • Low noise and low rotor scoring, which on an FZ-09 means the discs outlast several sets of pads
  • Better cold performance and higher thermal stability than the compound it succeeds - fewer laps lost bringing the pad in
  • Shipped in ZCOO's own packaging with the ZRM-S001C code printed on it, so a repeat order needs no guesswork
  • No proprietary tooling needed: the S001 drops into the Sumitomo caliper the FZ-09 already has

Construction and Material Quality

Manufacture is Japanese and unchanged across the range, the S001 included. A Sumitomo caliper spreads under peak line pressure, and a plate that yields with it moves the contact patch onto the pad's edges. The result on the Yamaha FZ-09 is a pad that wears evenly rather than tapering from one edge.

Performance and Feel

EXR's headline claim is specific: up to twenty percent more braking force in the second phase of braking. The reworked progression is what keeps the additional force usable at full lean. On an unfaired machine like the Yamaha FZ-09 that is a control argument, not a comfort one.

Fitment and Compatibility

ZCOO catalogues the S001 for the FZ-09 of 2014 to 2017. Before ordering, check that your caliper takes a pad of 69.5 mm length and 50.5 mm height. The same S001 shape covers 27 further machines in the 2026 catalogue. The reference is a front pad; ZCOO lists no rear equivalent.

Road Approval

No ECE R90 type approval is documented for this pad. It appears neither in ZCOO's own catalogue nor on the European distributor's site, and no approval number is printed on the packaging data available to us. ZCOO itself describes the compound as suited to competition machines and road machines alike, but that is a description of the mixture, not a type approval. Until the distributor confirms an approval in writing, treat this as a track and competition part: in Germany a replacement brake pad without ECE R90 approval may not be fitted to a motorcycle used on public roads. Ask us before ordering if you need this clarified for your machine.
