The MT-09 and the MT-09 SP share an airbox, so they share a part number, and one listing covers both. What they do not share is one obvious answer to which medium belongs in that airbox. The SM272P14 is the fine option: a dry special nonwoven filtering at 14 microns instead of the P08's 80, paying for that retention in airflow — 1,800 litres per square metre per second where the P08 flows 5,050. Finer holds back more and lets less through — a trade, and on these two machines it lands differently.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven medium with a filtration rating of 14 microns
- Airflow rated at 1,800 litres per square metre per second — lower than the P08 by design, because retention and flow pull against each other
- No oil and no dressing at any point in its life, so nothing can be drawn off it onto the intake sensors
- Made to the shape of the series airbox on the MT-09 and MT-09 SP; the original comes out, this goes in, the ECU map is untouched
- Cleaned with an air line and refitted rather than bought again, with a service life meant to match the bike's own
- Sprint Filter guarantees it for two years from the purchase date
Where the recommendation splits
An SP ridden hard, and especially one that sees circuit use, spends real time at wide-open throttle, and that is where a 1,800 litre ceiling stops being a number on a data sheet. For that bike the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres is the better balanced part, and it is worth saying so plainly. The P14 is specified for the other MT-09: the one used all year on secondary roads, through the loose chippings left after resurfacing and the dust farm traffic drags onto the tarmac in late summer. That machine lives at part throttle, well below the ceiling, and breathes whatever the route contains.
What a naked bike takes in
There is no fairing shaping the air around this motorcycle. The airbox sits in the middle of it, drawing a steady volume of whatever is passing. Most of what a road bike ingests is invisible from the saddle: fine mineral dust lifted by the traffic ahead, pollen and crop dust on rural routes. A medium rated at 80 microns passes a good part of that fraction in exchange for flow — a fair bargain on clean tarmac, a poorer one on a bike used in every month on roads nobody sweeps. The extra filtering area Sprint Filter folds into the element is what makes a mat this fine workable in a standard housing.
Care and cleaning
Nothing is oiled, so servicing the SM272P14 stays a dry job. An air line does most of it: send the air in from the clean face, against normal flow, working across the whole mat. Heavier deposits come off with lukewarm water and a little mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Then leave it in open air until it is dry through — no heat, never a flame — and refit it dry. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
