Sprint Filter was the official air filter supplier to KTM's Moto3 programme in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and the P08 F1-85 is the kind of medium that work produced: 85 microns of filtration and 15,000 litres per square metre per second, against 80 and 5,050 for the standard P08. The pedigree is real, and it is also the clearest description of where the medium belongs. A Moto3 race is over in well under an hour on a swept circuit, run by an engine apart again within weeks. A 390 Adventure is asked for the opposite of all of it.
Key Features
- The racing medium: dry polyester, 85 µm, 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Five microns more open than the standard P08 — flow bought with retention
- No filter oil at any stage, so nothing migrates onto the sensors downstream
- Direct replacement inside the standard airbox: no modification, no remap
- Washed and reused for the life of the bike, with two years of cover from purchase
- Specified for competition — a loaded 390 Adventure is better served by the P08 or P14
What a racing pedigree is telling you
Racing does not simply ask more of a part than road use; it asks something narrower. A competition engine works for short, intense periods and is then taken apart, so the cost of slightly coarser air never has time to accumulate into anything. Filtration there is a question about the next hour. On a 390 Adventure it is a question about the next decade: the same engine runs for years between major attention, often loaded, often at sustained load, frequently on surfaces that make their own dust. A specification written for the first case is not a compliment when applied to the second.
Sustained load is a different problem from peak flow
The 390 Adventure asks a great deal of its single, but it asks slowly: long climbs, a wide throttle at moderate revs, a pillion and luggage aboard. That is a duty cycle counted in hours, and it draws an enormous total volume of air without ever approaching the peak rate at which a medium becomes the limit. The P08 covers the peak already. What all those hours charge for is retention, which is precisely the half of the trade this element gives away. And no drop-in element makes a standard machine quicker — the honest benefit is an intake resistance that starts low and can be washed back to that value.
Care and cleaning
Far from a workshop the routine is unchanged and needs nothing carried: compressed air at the clean face of the PM200S F1-85, driven outward so the dust leaves as it came in. A deeper clean uses lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water is clear. The element then dries in open air, completely, before it goes anywhere near the box — never dried with heat, never beside a flame. Sprint Filter's illustrated maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the KTM 390 Adventure, 2020 to 2023, replacing the standard element in an unmodified airbox. This code covers thirteen machines in the KTM and Husqvarna small-capacity range, so order by code and year rather than by model name. The list is in the Fitment tab.
