DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Öhlins HO 717 exists because the Honda CBR300R (2014–2017) needed its own settings, not a shared set. A factory shock is set for an average rider on an average road, and few riders are either.

Key Features

  • Length 297 mm, set for this chassis
  • Fitted spring: Öhlins 60281-11 (Y)
  • Spring rate 100, set against this machine's weight
  • Bolts to the Honda CBR300R (2014–2017) using the standard mounting points
  • Stroke: 54 mm

The CBR300R in Particular

On a supersport machine, front-end feel under braking is what the rider trusts, and damping is what provides it. This part number spans model years 2014 to 2017; earlier and later generations take different numbers.

How Öhlins Builds It

The damper body is hard-anodised aluminium, which resists both corrosion and the thermal cycling a rear shock lives with. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Damping and Adjustment

Delivered spring rate: 100, which suits a solo rider of average weight. The unit measures 297 mm installed, which is the dimension the CBR300R's linkage expects. The damper moves 54 mm from full extension to full compression. Öhlins identifies the spring as 60281-11 (Y). The adjuster range is usable end to end rather than only around the middle. Compression and rebound are adjusted independently, so support under load can be set without changing how fast the wheel returns.

About the STX 36 Supersport Range

A 36 mm piston in a supersport shim stack: chosen where the swingarm leaves no room for a 46 mm body. Öhlins valves this specification for support under braking rather than for small-bump comfort. Length is adjustable on most numbers in this range, so rear ride height becomes a setup variable.

Fitment and Compatibility

Part number HO 717 and the Honda CBR300R (2014–2017) belong together; other model years take other numbers. Nothing about it is generic — the mounting dimensions alone rule out a different model.

Road Approval

Road approval: no documented status for the Honda CBR300R. Get in touch before ordering if the machine is to stay road legal.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
