DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00281-17 is a shock absorber spring rated at 90 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- Measured spring rate 90 N/mm
- 78 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 00281-17
- Free length 180 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
How Öhlins Makes Them
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.
Size and Rate
Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 180 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 90 N/mm.
Where This Rate Belongs
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
What Fitting Involves
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
