DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06452-07 is a shock absorber spring rated at 72 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Öhlins part number 06452-07
- 118 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Free length 220 mm
- Inner diameter 61 mm
- Measured spring rate 72 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
Why the Rate Holds
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.
The Numbers That Matter
Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 61 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 72 N/mm
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
Installation
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
