DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 00281-21
  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • Free length 240 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 111 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 240 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 60 N/mm

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Fitting

Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
