DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06774-11 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 270 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06774-11
  • Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 155 mm of usable stroke

Why the Rate Holds

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 70 mm × 270 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 50 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
