DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60282-01 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated black
  • Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60282-01
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 81 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 180 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 180 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 50 N/mm.

Choosing 50 N/mm

This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

What Fitting Involves

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
