DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-85 is a shock absorber spring rated at 36 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 180 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00180-85
  • Measured spring rate 36 N/mm
  • 100 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Dimensions

The 46 mm bore and 180 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 36 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 36 N/mm

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Fitting

Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
