DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06772-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 25 N/mm, 340 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 340 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06772-02
  • Measured spring rate 25 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 70 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Dimensions

The 70 mm bore and 340 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 25 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
