DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-40 is a shock absorber spring rated at 25-40 N/mm, 330 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Progressively wound
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00180-40
  • Free length 330 mm
  • Measured spring rate 25-40 N/mm (progressive)
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 155 mm of usable stroke

Why the Rate Holds

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 330 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
