DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00280-18 is a shock absorber spring rated at 18 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00280-18
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 128 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Measured spring rate 18 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 200 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
