DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60180-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 165 N/mm, 310 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 310 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60180-02
  • 165 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 165 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Size and Rate

Free length 310 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 165 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
