DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21041-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 150 mm
  • 72 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21041-36
  • Measured spring rate 105 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Size and Rate

At 150 mm free length and 51 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Fitting

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
