Dust is usually pictured as a place: a gravel track, a dry riverbed, somewhere a road-registered 155 rarely goes. On a machine used for ordinary journeys it is better understood as a season. Pollen for a few weeks in spring, winter grit swept up and blown about long after the salt lorries have stopped, a dry spell that turns every field edge into a source, a summer of resurfacing with the fines still loose on the surface. The ZT 155G may meet more airborne solids in six weeks of that than in all the rest of the year together.

A load that arrives in blocks

Averaged across a year, the air a commuting 155 breathes looks unremarkable, and a medium chosen for that average will be the wrong one for the few weeks that do most of the work. Loading is not spread evenly along the odometer; it comes in concentrated spells, and those spells are also when a wider opening has the most material to be wide about. The finer mat is a way of buying for the worst weeks rather than the typical ones, which is a reasonable thing to do when the price of it is flow rather than reliability.

It need not be permanent either. Care and cleaning

Dry servicing first: an air line on the clean face, worked outward, drives the season back out of the medium. If the deposit has bonded rather than settled, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse it thoroughly. It then dries in open, moving air at ambient temperature — never with heat and never over a flame — and the SM276P14 returns to the housing dry, with nothing applied.
