A filter does not supply air. It stands in the way of air the engine is already able to draw, and the most a better one can do is stand in the way less. How much the engine can draw is settled by its displacement, its valve timing and the size of its throttle, none of which is on this page. That is the frame for the Sprint Filter PM185S F1-85 on a 155 cm³ single: a racing medium filtering at 85 microns with a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec, close to three times the flow rating of the standard P08, offered to an engine whose appetite was capped long before the airbox.

Where the ceiling actually sits

Fit the freest-flowing element in the catalogue and the engine still draws what it drew before, minus a slightly smaller deduction. On a large four at the top of its rev range that deduction is worth arguing over; on a 155 cm³ single it is small in absolute terms, because the volume being moved is small. The honest summary is that this element takes away a little more of a modest obstruction. It will not make a standard NVX quicker, and the transmission and final drive have far more to say about how the scooter accelerates than any air filter ever will.

What the trade costs here

The mesh figure moves from 80 microns to 85, and that applies continuously, every minute the engine runs, in stationary traffic as much as anywhere else. The flow advantage applies only while the engine is asking for everything it can take. The part also costs about three times what the standard P08 costs in this size. There is a case for the racing medium — closed-circuit scooter racing, where elements are blown clean between heats and the engine sits near its peak for a whole session — and outside that case the P08 is the better balanced element on the same machine, with the 14-micron P14 as the answer to dust rather than to lap times.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean side, blowing outwards, restores the medium and takes about a minute. If it needs more than that, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will bring it back; rinse until clear, then dry it fully in moving air. No heaters, no flame, no refitting while damp, and no oil at any stage — the element is dry by design and stays that way.
