Sprint Filter's catalogue usually leaves gaps. The housing that carried the earlier R nineT lists six machines for the standard weave, two for the fine medium and one for the racing weave, so the choice on offer depends on which bike you have. Not here. Three media are listed for this airbox, at 80, 14 and 85 microns, and each is available for each of the three machines. For an R12 nineT owner the fitment question is therefore settled whichever way the decision goes, and the whole choice has moved into the suffix on the box. PM213S is the answer that says road.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester at 80 microns, used with no oil at any stage
- 5,050 l/m²/sec of rated flow, the middle of the three offered here
- Holds back 93.13 per cent of 100-micron particles in the maker's test
- About double the filtering surface of a typical performance element
- Sits in the series airbox exactly as the paper panel does
- Serviced by cleaning rather than replacement, and covered for two years
Reading the three suffixes
The catalogue offers this airbox 80 microns at 5,050 l/m²/sec, 14 microns at 1,800, and 85 microns at 15,000. That is not a ladder with a top and a bottom but one trade seen from three positions: a closer material holds more back and passes less through, an opener one the reverse, and no arrangement of fibres improves both at once. The standard weave sits in the middle because that is where a road motorcycle lives: mixed surfaces, mixed weather, no session that holds the throttle open for a minute at a time.
What the middle position buys
Mostly it buys never being badly wrong. Dust arrives on public roads unannounced; a medium that is neither the finest nor the openest handles it without having been chosen for it. The return is a resistance lower than a loaded paper panel and, more usefully, steadier across the interval, plus an element that is cleaned instead of binned. It is not a power part: nothing that drops into a series airbox lifts the output of a standard machine.
Care and cleaning
The PM213S is regenerated with a compressor rather than replaced. Hold the nozzle to the side facing the engine and drive the dust back out the way it came in; from the dirty face it would only be buried. Water is the second step and only when needed: lukewarm, a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clean. Drying happens in air and on the element's own schedule, because a heat gun, an oven or a flame will finish the cloth long before any road does. It returns to the box dry, with nothing applied. Downloads holds the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R12 nineT of 2025 and 2026, into the standard airbox with nothing altered. The same panel serves the R12 and, before either of them, the R nineT built between 2021 and 2024, so three machines span a change of model name. What it does not serve is everything the name suggests: the 2014 to 2016 R nineT and all R nineT Scramblers, late ones included, are a different number. The model name is not enough to order by; year and variant decide. All three appear under Fitment.
