DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-07 is a shock absorber spring rated at 46 N/mm, 235 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 46 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 06310-07
  • Free length 235 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

Size and Rate

The 61 mm bore and 235 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 46 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 46 N/mm

This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Installation

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
