DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 35 N/mm, 90 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 35 N/mm
  • Free length 90 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00180-13
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 38 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated black
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 90 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 35 N/mm

Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

What Fitting Involves

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
