Packing wears out. The mineral or glass wool inside a silencer breaks down under heat and gas pulses, and once it has gone the exhaust gets louder, harsher and — on a bike with a homologated system — potentially non-compliant. A repack kit puts the material back.

Why repacking matters
A silencer that has lost its packing is not a silencer, it is a pipe with a shell around it. The sound goes up, the character changes from a note to a rasp, and on a system that carries a type approval the measured level can move outside what was homologated.
How quickly this happens depends on use. A GS that spends its life at moderate revs on long roads holds its packing far longer than a bike that is ridden hard and short. There is no service interval published for this — the honest indicator is your ears.
The cheapest way to fix a tired exhaust
Of the three service parts Akrapovic lists for this silencer, the repack kit is the least expensive by a long way — and it is the one that addresses function rather than appearance. A silencer with a scuffed sleeve still works; one with degraded packing does not.
If the exhaust both looks and sounds tired, all three parts together come to less than a fraction of a new system.
What Akrapovic does not state
No description, no photograph, no instruction sheet and no statement of the packing material. Repacking a silencer means opening it, and the method varies by design — riveted, welded or bolted end caps all need different handling. If you have not done it before, this is a job for a workshop, and we would rather say that than imply it drops in.
