An MSX125 is often not the vehicle that made the journey. It travels in the back of a van, in a camper's garage, on the tail of a trailer, and comes out at the far end for the part nothing larger wants: the gravel lane through a campsite, the two kilometres of access road past the point where the tarmac stops. None of that is off-road riding — it is the last stretch of somebody else's trip, and in terms of the air the engine draws, the dirtiest stretch of it by a wide margin. The Sprint Filter P14 is built for that: a dry non-woven medium filtering at 14 microns.
Key Features
- Non-woven filtering mat, dry in service, with no oil film that could be drawn downstream
- 14 microns of retention against a rated 1,800 litres per square metre per second
- The surface doing the filtering is close to double that of a typical performance element
- Sits in the series airbox in place of the paper panel; box and mapping are left alone
- Cleaned and refitted rather than consumed, turning a service item into a permanent fitting
- Two years of manufacturer cover, running from the day it is bought
Where the tarmac stops
Unsurfaced ground gives up most of what it has at low speed. A dry gravel lane taken at little more than walking pace still lifts a cloud, and a small machine crossing it sits inside that cloud rather than ahead of it. What reaches the airbox there is not the occasional stone but a steady load of fines, weighted to the small end because the heavier grains fall out of the air within a couple of machine lengths. The material differs in character too: road dust is largely what traffic leaves on a hard surface, while a compacted yard or a gravel lane offers crushed stone and dried earth, angular, mineral and in far greater supply.
Fourteen microns as a choice, not a rank
The range runs along one relationship, in one direction only: a tighter medium holds more back and lets less through. The P08 is rated at 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second, this P14 at 14 microns and 1,800, the T12 at 7 and 560. That is a choice of air, not a ranking. Taking the P14 pays for retention in flow, and on a machine this size that is a currency the engine does not use: a 125 held to a licence class has its air demand fixed by displacement and the rev limit, comfortably inside what the box delivers.
Care and cleaning
Servicing is dry work and quick. Compressed air comes first, applied to the clean side so the dust travels back out of the mat instead of further into it. Warm water with a mild detergent handles what air will not shift; rinse until nothing further comes away. Drying happens in open air and nowhere else — heat guns and naked flame both ruin it — and the SM224P14 goes back in only once it is dry throughout. The maintenance leaflet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Honda MSX125 of 2021 to 2026. The identical element serves the Grom of the same years, this motorcycle under Honda's other name, which is why one airbox appears against two machines. The Fitment tab lists both.
