The 14-micron mat is listed for the G 310 R and the Apache RR310, and not for the GS that shares their airbox. That looks backwards until you consider what the medium is drawn against: not the coarse grit thrown up by a gravel track, but the fine suspended material that hangs in air — which is as much an urban phenomenon as a desert one, and which a commuting roadster meets every working day.

Fine material, delivered slowly

Traffic produces a constant supply of very small particles, and a bike used in it draws air at low road speed for long stretches with no clean-air interval to dilute the load. Nothing about that looks dramatic on the filter face. It simply accumulates. A mat that filters through its depth has room to take that in without its restriction climbing as sharply as a surface-loaded element of the same rating, which is the practical argument for the PM189P14 on a machine that spends its life in town.

The price of the finer mat

It is still a trade. Against the 80-micron weave in the same box, this mat is rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec instead of 5,050, and the flow it gives up is given up on the open road as well as in traffic. Neither medium is better in general; each is drawn for different air. What neither of them does is make the bike faster — in an unmodified airbox this element leaves a standard G 310 R exactly as strong as it was. The benefit is a steadier intake restriction and a panel that is washed rather than replaced.

Care and cleaning

Clean the PM189P14 with compressed air on its clean face, worked outwards, and allow more time than a woven panel needs — depth-loaded material releases gradually. When air stops being enough, lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes it; rinse until the water runs off clear. Dry in moving air at room temperature only, never with heat of any kind.
