How Öhlins Makes Them
The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Choosing 95 N/mm
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
Fitting
Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
