Why the Rate Holds
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

Choosing 95 N/mm
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Fitting
Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
