Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

Öhlins holds the free length at 160 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Installation
Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
