How Öhlins Makes Them
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

What This Rate Does
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
What Fitting Involves
Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
