Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Where This Rate Belongs
Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.
Installation
Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
