How Öhlins Makes Them
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Choosing 36 N/mm
A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
Fitting
The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
