Why the Rate Holds
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.
The Numbers That Matter
The 46 mm bore and 135 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 160 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 160 N/mm
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Fitting
Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
