Nolan built the X-804 RS Ultra Carbon as a circuit helmet first and a road helmet second. The Dom Herbertson Replica takes that platform and wraps it in the livery of a rider who does his work on the least forgiving circuit there is — the 60.7 km Mountain Course on the Isle of Man, where the barriers are stone walls and the run-off is a hedge. Aquamarine over exposed carbon weave, white blocking, and a graphic that makes no attempt to be discreet.

The rider behind the livery

Dom Herbertson is a British road racer who made his TT debut in 2014 and has since built one of the more consistent top-ten records in the modern paddock — the majority of it compressed into the last three seasons. In 2025 he took third in the Supertwin TT for Melbray Racing, his second career TT podium, in a year that also marked his 50th TT start. Real road racing is a discipline where helmet choice is not a sponsorship formality: at 200 km/h between hedgerows, aerodynamic stability and an unobstructed field of view are working equipment. Four shell sizes, and why that number matters

A helmet built in one or two shell sizes uses padding to bridge the gap between head sizes. That works, up to a point — but it means a small head sits inside a shell that is aerodynamically and structurally sized for someone else, carrying mass it does not need. The X-804 RS Ultra Carbon is moulded in four discrete shells. An XXS rider gets a shell scaled to an XXS head; an XXXL rider gets the outer volume the fit actually requires. The practical result is that the quoted 1,420 g is not a figure that only applies to a size M — the whole range stays close to it, and the aerodynamic profile stays proportionate rather than ballooning at the top of the range.

Aerodynamics: the RS spoiler and what it is actually for

The RAS rear spoiler is not styling. Its job begins where most road riding ends — tucked fully behind the screen at sustained high speed, where an unstable helmet transmits every buffet into the rider's neck and turns a straight into work. Developed in the wind tunnel with racers, the spoiler stabilises the helmet in the turbulent air behind a fairing and reduces the lift and drag that otherwise force the head upward. On the Mountain Course, where the fast sections are measured in miles rather than metres, that stability is the difference between resting on a straight and fighting it.

225° × 97°: the field-of-view argument

Race helmets are increasingly judged on aperture, and for good reason. With the head down and the chin close to the tank, a conventional eyeport crops exactly the part of the world a rider needs — the apex ahead and the rival in the periphery. Nolan opened the X-804's aperture to 225° horizontally and 97° vertically. In a full racing tuck you are looking through the top of the opening, and the extra vertical millimetres are the ones that let you see the corner rather than the tank. The flat visor profile keeps optical distortion low across that width, and the anti-scratch treatment is applied on both faces.

Visor system, Pinlock and the locking mechanism

The Ultrawide visor is Pinlock-prepared and ships with the Pinlock inner lens as standard, so anti-fog is not an upsell. A central locking mechanism secures the visor shut — a detail that reads as trivial in a showroom and stops reading that way the moment you consider a high-speed slide with an unlatched visor. The helmet is also compatible with Nolan's Irid photochromic visor and is eyewear-adaptive, with channels in the cheek pads for spectacle arms. Carbon Fitting Racing Experience interior

The lining uses active carbon fibre rather than a conventional technical textile. Carbon fibre in a liner does three useful things: it moves moisture rather than holding it, it accelerates cooling as air passes through, and it dissipates the static charge that otherwise makes a liner cling. The cheek pads are anatomically shaped with removable inner padding, and Steadyfit pads in thicker and thinner versions are available separately to tune the fit without changing helmet size — the honest way to fix a helmet that is half a size loose at the jaw.

Safety systems

Retention is by double-D ring — still the reference in racing, because there is nothing in the system to fail mechanically. The EPS is multi-density, so the liner can be tuned zone by zone rather than compromising on one hardness for the whole head. Advanced NERS lets a trained first responder withdraw the cheek pads and lift the helmet clear with the head and neck kept in line. UNECE R 22-06 approval covers rotational and oblique impact testing that the previous 22.05 standard did not.

What this helmet is not

It is not an intercom helmet. The X-804 RS Ultra Carbon is not prepared for Nolan's N-Com system and has no cavity for a communication unit — that is a deliberate consequence of building a shell around a race brief rather than a touring one. It also has no internal sun visor, for the same reason: the extra mechanism and the extra millimetres are not there. If you want music and turn-by-turn on a commute, this is the wrong helmet and we would rather say so here than have it come back.

Sizing

Measure the circumference of your head roughly 2.5 cm above the eyebrows, at the widest point. Nolan's own guidance for this shell is that if you fall between two sizes, take the smaller one — the interior beds in with use, and a race helmet that is loose when new will be too loose after a season.
