A Twin-Sided Swingarm
Ducati gave the 899 a conventional double-sided swingarm rather than the single-sided arm of the larger Panigales. It was a cost decision and it also made the bike marginally lighter.
Eight Hundred and Ninety-Eight Cubic Centimetres
A smaller Superquadro making 148 hp, with a narrower bore and a longer stroke than the 1199. It was substantially easier to ride quickly and rather more enjoyable on a road.
The Monocoque Stayed
The 899 kept the frameless architecture of its larger sibling, with the airbox forming the structure between the headstock and the engine. Nothing else in the middleweight class was built that way.
Housing Alone
This part covers the throttle assembly and not the switch block. It suits a bike whose electrics are healthy and whose owner is only bothered by the moulded plastic.
A Machined Bore
The throttle tube turns in a bore that is cut rather than formed. Ten years on, that is the difference between a grip that still feels tight and one that has developed a little play.
Black Anodised
Converted into the metal rather than laid over it. There is no coating to lift from an edge after a decade of gloves and sunlight.
Ergal, Specifically
The 7075 grade rather than ordinary machined aluminium, at roughly twice the yield strength. On a component clamped around a handlebar that difference is structural rather than cosmetic.
The Better Panigale
A great many riders who owned both preferred the 899. It gave up power it could not use on a road and gained a chassis that did not require constant negotiation.
