The Exhaust Under the Seat
The 899 kept the underseat silencers the 959 later lost to Euro 4. It is a large part of why the smaller Panigale looks better than its successor and owners will tell you so unprompted.
A Hundred and Forty-Eight Horsepower
From 898 cc, which is a great deal for a middleweight twin. It embarrassed supersport fours and was considerably easier to ride than the 1199 above it.
Universal Slots
One clamp pattern for the original master cylinder and the radial aftermarket ones. It covers the motorcycle as sold and the same bike after a brake upgrade.
Three Finishes
Black, red and titanium, each grown into the aluminium electrochemically. There is no film on the surface, so a scuff dulls the metal rather than exposing it.
A Decade of Weather
These bikes are now ten years old and their moulded blocks have been through as many winters. The button usually still works; the terminal underneath it is what has given up.
Cut From Solid
Ergal 7075 with the elements sealed inside the body. No clipped lid means nothing to lose tension across ten years of a big twin's vibration.
Twin-Sided at the Rear
Ducati fitted a conventional swingarm rather than the single-sided arm of the larger Panigales. It saved cost and it also saved weight, which the company never mentioned.
Factory Connector
Pre-wired, nothing spliced. Two fasteners and a plug, and the loom stays as it was when it left Bologna.
Half the Price of the 1199
Ducati positioned the 899 well below its flagship while giving it the same frameless architecture and the same electronics package. A great many people worked out that this was the sensible purchase, and a decade later most of them still think so.
