KTM's Only Superbike
The RC8 is the single attempt the company has made at a full-fairing sports bike, and it was a serious one: a 1195 cc V-twin making 175 hp in R specification, a chassis that reviewers praised without qualification, and bodywork nobody could ignore.
Adjustable to an Unusual Degree
Footrests, handlebars, seat height and even the subframe could be moved to suit the rider. That came from KTM's enduro background and it remains rare on a superbike, where fit is usually something the rider adapts to rather than the reverse.
A Simple Left Cluster
Indicators, horn and beam, without the menu depth a modern superbike carries. Fewer functions means larger buttons with real space between them, which suits a motorcycle operated in racing gloves as often as road ones.
Fifteen Years On
The oldest RC8s are approaching two decades. The moulded housing has not broken; the plastic has hardened, the clipped halves have developed play and the buttons across them stopped confirming anything some time ago.
Increasingly a Track Bike
An RC8 R costs very little now and remains quick. More of them are being converted for circuit use every year, which means pit lane operation and hot washing rather than gentle road miles, and that is harder on switchgear.
Water Down the Clip-On
The fairing directs air over the rider rather than around the hands. In sustained rain the bar carries water directly to the switch, and the seam of a two-piece housing is precisely where it enters.
Black Anodised
A single finish, through the surface. On a motorcycle whose bodywork is as assertive as the RC8's, a cockpit component that draws no attention is what most owners choose.
