An Electric Screen
Raised and lowered from a thumbwheel while moving, over a range wide enough to change the weather behind it. On the RT it is the most used control after the throttle.
Radar Cruise Control
Available on later examples and genuinely useful on a motorcycle bought for six-hour days. BMW was among the first manufacturers to offer it.
Three Hundred Kilograms Loaded
With a passenger, luggage and a full tank the RT is very heavy, and the sidestand carries all of it at every stop. Bent stands are a known consequence of that.
Ridden Through Winter
An RT is a year-round motorcycle in a way most bikes are not, which means the switch spends months in salt spray and dies accordingly.
The Interlock in One Sentence
No gear with the stand down, and no exception to it. That is the whole logic.
An Intermittent Fault
A dying switch does not stop working cleanly. It cuts the engine at a junction, behaves perfectly in the garage and repeats a week later.
Or When It Breaks
A bent stand on a loaded bike is common, and a replacement is not always to hand. Removing the assembly is sometimes the practical answer.
Fitted First
Until the engine will run in gear, nothing else on the bike can be commissioned. It is the job that unlocks the evening.
Before You Fit It
Ask whether the stand is still on the bike. If it is, leave the switch connected and put this part back in the box.
The Simplest Part on the Bike
There is no adjustment, no polarity to observe and no configuration. It either restores the expected state or it does not, and it always does.
