What Is Being Emulated
Not the valve itself but the position sensor inside the motor that drives it. That signal is what the controller checks and what an aftermarket exhaust cannot provide.
The Fault It Prevents
An actuator error, logged and displayed, returning after every reset until the circuit reads correctly.
Introduced in 2015
BMW added a half fairing to the R1200R and called it the RS, reviving a name from the 1970s. It is a quiet, competent motorcycle that generates almost no conversation.
Clip-Ons Above the Yoke
Mounted high enough that the RS works for a full day without punishing anybody's wrists. It is a sports tourer that understood which half of the description matters.
Dynamic ESA
Electronically adjusted damping was an option and most examples have it. Loaded and two up on a bad road it is the feature that most obviously earns its cost.
Why the Exhaust Changes
Weight and appearance in roughly equal measure. The standard silencer on a boxer is large and the aftermarket alternatives are considerably lighter.
One Connector
BMW's own plug, no adapters and nothing spliced.
Keep the Standard Parts
Silencer and servo refit together and are worth money at resale. Nothing here damages either of them.
Nothing Coded
No dealer visit and no adaptation. The controller reads a valid answer from the first start.
Noise Approval
Removing the valve changes how the motorcycle meets its noise limit, whatever the exhaust supplier's documentation claims.
Half a Fairing Is the Point
Enough protection for a long motorway section and little enough that the motorcycle still steers like a naked bike. It is a compromise BMW has been making since the 1970s and the RS is one of the better versions of it.
