Where the Space Goes
Behind the engine among the shock, the linkage and whatever exhaust the owner has fitted. Removing the vessel makes all three considerably easier to reach.
Ethanol Shortens It
Modern pump blends are harder on activated charcoal than the fuel the system was designed around, which is why canisters on machines from the last decade give up sooner than intended.
An Older Bike, a Spent Bed
On anything past a decade the charcoal has almost certainly stopped absorbing, which makes the assembly dead weight in the most literal sense available.
Vapour Is Not Waste
The system exists to burn what would otherwise escape, which is a sensible idea. The objection is to the hardware rather than to the principle behind it.
A Bigger Tank, More Vapour
The touring models produce proportionally more for a canister that has not grown to match, which is why saturation arrives sooner on those bikes.
What Owners Report
Hard starting when the tank is full, an uneven idle for the first few minutes and a smell of fuel around the machine. Each has other causes, which is why the canister is rarely the first suspect.
On a Bike That Tours
Filling to the brim at every stop is exactly what a rider crossing empty country does, and exactly what ruins a charcoal bed. The models with the largest tanks therefore suffer most, which is the opposite of convenient.
